It's unfortunate as I did enjoy working there and they did look after me for the most part (aside from being made redundant) and there is not very many DevOps roles that will pay over $200K and mostly be 9-5 jobs with very little OT.įortunately I invested my salary wisely and managed to completely pay off 4 mortgages in the last 5 years so I've got a nice little side salary and not that many expenses, so not in a rush to find another job. I was offered a role within the IT team, but the money would be about half my current salary and while I can work remotely they'd want me to eventually move into a city that has an office so I can come onsite more often.

However about 1.5 years ago it started to become apparent that we had literally automated *everything*, sure there was still regular maintenance and reviews being done but for the last 1.5 years I realistically was only working an hour or two per day as there was so little to do and I am not exactly going to quit a job paying this much, I figured this day would eventually come and it did yesterday.īasically they said the majority of the DevOps teams were being dissolved (they're keeping 75 people who work with certain applications), the IT and Software Engineering teams are more than capable of managing all the code and a lot of the DevOps guys simply don't have work to do now. Over the next 3 years the department grew and I have to say management really did all the right moves, we were rarely denied anything we asked for no matter how much it cost, I would think that over 90% of the planned projects were delivered on time and on budget, which is really amazing. The company had a DevOps department but it was more Senior Sysadmins who could write enough Python/Bash/PowerShell to be dangerous, they needed a team of real DevOps with previous experience in lower level languages to work on the complex projects they had.

Long story short I flew out to the interview, got the job as a Senior Lead and a salary of $275k plus stock options and bonuses and the ability to work remotely so didn't need to move, despite hating the idea of working for a huge corporation it was really too good of an offer to turn down, significantly more than Amazon had offered me earlier the same year. I declined and said I wasn't interested and he messaged back and asked how much I earned, because he guaranteed they could offer significantly more, of course this piqued my interest as I thought I had an excellent wage. Nearly five years ago I was working as a manager for a DevOps department in a medium sized tech company, was making an excellent wage at the time ($190,000) which offset the insane amount of overtime we had to do.Īs always a recruiter from LinkedIn contacts me, this particular one was from a huge multi national conglomerate which I had zero interest in working for, he messaged me saying that this company was aggressively expanding their software engineering, development and DevOps teams for some huge projects, said they'd love to fly me in for an interview.
To give some insight into how this happened. I can't say too much due to NDA, I'm sure it'll probably end up public at some point but I'd rather not risk being the one to do so. However in this case it did happen to myself, and about 100+ other DevOps engineers. I often hear the joke in DevOps departments "If we automate everything we won't have a job" it's usually said facetiously.
